Update: Training 3: Are you solving the right problem? added!

In this article, I want to share with you my sketchnote summaries of the 3-Step Mindset Reset with Mel Robbins. In Mel’s words: “The 3-Step Mindset Reset is a free 3 video series to help you define the changes you want to make, increase your confidence, and give you tools to get started (even if you’re still in lockdown)”.

If you want to check it out, you can sign up for the free online course here. I’ve been a huge fan of Mel Robbins ever since I read her book The 5 Second Rule. You can read my summary of the book here or watch my animated book review here.

I hope that this mini course will be useful to you. If that’s the case, I also highly recommend you listen to Mel’s two Audible Originals, Kick Ass with Mel Robbins and Take Control of Your Life with Mel Robbins.

Training 1: The 5 Traps of Self-Doubt

In the first training session of the 3-Step Mindset Reset series, Mel talks about the 5 traps of self-doubt: (1) hesitation, (2) hiding, (3) hypercritical, (4) helplessness, and (5) anxiety. In the video, she shows clips from a conference where she coaches people from the audience through these 5 traps. The main takeaway for me was that you can still move forward even is you don’t feel ready and that the only thing that can break the traps of self-doubt is action. So whenever you catch yourself falling into one of the traps, just 5-4-3-2-1 and take action.

The first Mindset Reset video was also a great reminder of some of the things I learned from The 5 Second Rule. For example that the feeling of nervousness in your body is the exact same feeling you get when you feel excited. Knowing this can help you trick your mind to thinking that you’re actually excited and not nervous.

It’s much easier to convince your brain that all those nervous feelings are just excitement, rather than to try to calm yourself down. When using this technique in experiments, ranging from singing karaoke to giving a speech to taking a math test, participants who said “I’m excited” did better in every single challenge than participants who said “I’m anxious.” I’m excited doesn’t actually lower the feelings surging through your body. It just gives your mind an explanation that empowers you. Can you imagine what you could do if you reframed your nervousness to excitement? I hope you will find out!

I also learned something new about perfectionism. As Mel explained, perfectionism is actually a coping mechanism to shield ourselves from critics. The paradox of this however, is that by not taking action we end up with the exact result that we want to avoid: failure.

I hope this makes sense to you and that my sketchnote will be a useful reminder of this first training. Scroll down to download the printable PDF.

Support me with a Coffee

NOTE: I set up a Ko-fi account which allows creatives like me to receive donations for their work. If you want to support me, you can do that by buying me a coffee on Ko-fi. Please note that this is completely optional. Only do it if you find value in my work and you have the means to support others. Thank you either way for being here!

Training 2: The 3 Myths and 3 Truths of Passion

In the second training session of the 3-Step Mindset Reset series, Mel talks about ‘The 3 Myths and 3 Truths of Passion’

The main takeaway of this video for me is that passion is nothing more than energy. The 3 mistakes that we tend to make when we think about passion is that:

  1. We look for passion in the wrong places,
  2. We ask the wrong questions, and
  3. We assume that passion is something waiting to be found.

But all of these are mistakes. Passion is not outside of you. It is a state of being, therefore you can find it within you.  What we want when we are looking for more passion is actually more energy. Instead of asking ourselves ‘What am I passionate about?’ we should rather ask ‘When do I feel energized?’. And lastly, passion is not something to be found, but rather something that you create.

Therefore, according to Mel Robbins, the formula for passion is:

“Do more of what energizes you and do less of what depletes you.” – Mel Robbins

Training 3: Are you solving the right problem?

The third training session of the 3-Step Mindset Reset series by Mel Robbins is titled ”Are you solving the right problem?”. In this video, Mel teaches us how to become outcome/solution thinkers by asking the question:

“What do you want?” What is the thing that’s bothering you that needs solving?

The main takeaway from the third training for me was that sometimes we get so caught up feeling stuck that we are focusing on the wrong problem. In the video, Mel coaches someone from the audience who is frustrated with not finding a full-time job after doing all the right things. After questioning her a little bit, Mel points out that her real problem is ‘not having insurance coverage to proceed with her divorce’ (right problem) and not ‘not having a full-time job’ (wrong problem) that she wanted a solution for. Her example shows that many times we identify the wrong problem that we want to solve. But once we realize the underlying issue, we can find other ways to get to our desired outcome. In this case, one solution to get insurance was to find a full-time job. But by focusing on the wrong issue, she disregarded other ways to go about it, like doing contract work and using that income to pay into the insurance herself.
